We'd like to know who out there has tried quitting tobacco.  If you answer yes, let us know what you've tried, whether it worked (and for how long).

I used hypnosis.  I was not very open minded at first, but it worked for me and I loved to smoke and chew.  Tobacco free for a couple years.

I used the patch.  It still sucked, but I wouldn't have been able to quit by myself.  I've been tobacco-free for several years now.

One of the most important components about quitting is not the physical addiction, but the way nicotine ties in with memories. Knowing how nicotine works is the most effective way to fight it, and eventually quit. Think about when you smoke; before school, in the car, after school, before bed, a break at work, etc.? These actions are now tied in with the of smoking and when you quit you will still likely be reminded of this when you repeat these actions or go to the same places where you used to smoke.

One method that I am confident will work for me (whether it takes once or one-hundred attempts) is to use the nicorette gum/patch specifically when I am somewhere or doing something that I would have done while smoking. I also plan on switching to tobacco/nicotine free cigarettes during this time, so that I still have the action of smoking, but nicotine is not involved, allowing those ties between smoking and memories to deteriorate.

i've quit several times. the most successful was when i started running two miles every morning. it was a good way to deal with pent-up-not-getting-any-nicotine aggression and kept me from smoking the rest of the day because i knew it would suck running the next morning if i did.

i'm quitting again (and hopefully for the last time) in a month. since it's almost the holidays, i'm thinking that i'll guilt trip myself by buying food or clothing for the homeless every time i want to buy a pack. that way, if i start to break and go to the store to buy cigarettes, i'll think, "a homeless guy can eat or i can be a dirty filthy smoker again." i'm hoping it will work. i really think that to quit you have to channel your stress or whatever to somewhere else that's positive.

by the way, i really, really hate a lot of anti-smoking campaigns. seriously, the scare tactics and moralism make me want to smoke more. i'm all for support groups and stuff to help people quit and i'm all for outlawing indoor smoking, but these outdoor bans, etc....are incredibly obnoxious. it seems to me that most people self-medicate, one way or another. food, alcohol, cigarettes...pick your poison. i never thoutht i'd become a smoker (back then i even thought anti-smoking campaigns were annoying), but things got stressful and i know a lot of smokers, so it was an easy release. no excuses, i just hate being judged like i'm a bad person.

one last way to help you quit: start dating a really attractive non-smoker. that's a lot of motivation.
